A schematic depicting the innate response to brain injury. Damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs) are sensed by microglia, astrocytes and macrophages causing an increased permeability of the BBB enabling immune cell migration to the sites of tissue damage where inflammatory processes begin to occur through the release of inflammatory mediators.
